OBITUARIES

Petra Alvarez Farias
July 24, 1915 - October 23, 2010

Petra Alvarez Farias was born on July 24, 1915, in Brownsville, Texas, third oldest of nine children. She was ninety-five years old. She was known as the matriarch of the Alvarez family and was revered and respected by all who knew her.

Petra’s parents, Francisco Alvarez and Vicenta Gonzalez Alvarez opened La Union General Store at 13th and Tyler St. in the 1920’s; later the store was known as Alvarez & Sons, with the family residing above the business. The residence and store now house the Good Neighbor Settlement House. Petra was proficient with financial transactions assisting her father with accounting. Up until recently, she would scan all sales receipts for their accuracy.

Petra was the loving and devoted wife of Daniel V. Farias, with whom she shared 58 years of marriage and who preceded her in death. She was the great woman behind the man. Together they shared a wonderful life with their daughters, Dora Luz Farias Cackley and Delia Farias Coy of Brownsville. Petra’s life-long passion was her garden which was admired by all. Petra, a devout Catholic throughout her life was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Francisco and Vicenta Alvarez; her husband, Daniel V. Farias; her sister, Maria del Refugio (Cuca) Gonzalez; and 6 brothers: Juan Alvarez, Roman Alvarez, Luis Alvarez, Frank Alvarez, Robert Alvarez, and Raul Alvarez.

Surviving Petra are her daughters, Dora (Bob) Cackley and Delia (Emilio) Coy; her brother, Gilbert Alvarez; her grandchildren: Robert (Luisa) Cackley, Marisa (Alex) Muñoz, Alexa Coy and Daniel Coy; five great-grandsons: Kass and Keaton Cackley, Colton and Cameron Muñoz, and Jared Coy who were the joy of her life. Petra is also survived by several of her sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews and their children who all affectionately called her “Tia Pete”.

Special thanks go to Maria Sosa and Ofelia Galvan who were her wonderful and thoughtful caregivers for many years.
