Maria del Rosario “Chayo” Gray, 66, entered into the glory of her eternal life on Monday, November 12, 2018 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville with her daughter and family by her bedside.
Mrs. Gray was born to Miguel Porfirio Cortinas and Maria Concepcion Hinojosa in Brownsville, Texas. She attended Villa Maria High School and graduated with her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas – Brownsville. She was a dedicated educator of many years, teaching and caring for numerous students whom she considered her own, from St. Mary’s Catholic School, Los Fresnos Elementary with the Los Fresnos C.I.S.D., R. L. Martin Elementary with the Brownsville I.S.D., St. Joseph’s Academy of Brownsville, and retiring at Vermillion Elementary with the Brownsville I.S.D. In her spare time, she enjoyed crochet and visiting with friends. Maria loved her daughter immensely and treated her friends as if they were her own children, as well as all of the other children who she was privileged to care for. She was very generous, a kind spirit, and will be profoundly missed by all those fortunate enough to have known her.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald J. “Ted” Gray, and by her parents.
Mrs. Gray is survived by her only daughter, Katrina Marie Gray; brothers Miguel R. Cortinas (Isabel) and their 3 children, David Luis Cortinas, and Reynaldo M. Cortinas (Yolanda) and their 2 children; and sisters, Anna Maria Delgado (Ricardo) and their 3 children and Maria Isabel Small (Jonathan) and their 2 children. Also surviving her are 2 grandnieces and 4 grandnephews.
