Agnes Tipton Velten

DALLAS, TX. - Agnes Elizabeth Tipton Velten entered into eternal rest on Friday, the 23rd of October 2026 in Dallas, Texas. She was 95 years of age.

Agnes Elizabeth Tipton Velten was born in Brownsville, Texas, to her parents, Margaret and Maurice Tipton. She attended West Brownsville School, now named Russell Elementary, and graduated from Brownsville High School in 1948. She was a student at Texas Southmost College for one year and then attended and graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a degree in elementary education.

She was united in marriage to Robert Edwin Velten, a Brownsville native, on August 29, 1952. The couple lived in College Station for two years, where she was employed as a high school librarian in Bryan, Texas. Upon Robert's graduation from Texas A&M University and after receiving his commission in the United States Air Force in 1952, they completed a tour of active duty in Okinawa. After returning to the United States, they lived in Austin for ten months before returning to Brownsville in 1957, where they made their permanent home.

Agnes taught at Russell Elementary for seven years and Annie S. Putegnat Elementary for one year. She then became one of the first teachers in Brownsville to be trained in the field of learning disabilities. For the next 28 years, she served the students and teachers of the Brownsville Independent School District as a special education teacher, educational diagnostician, and special education supervisor. She was dedicated to helping children with disabilities.

Agnes was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served for many years as a deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher, and chairperson of the Christian Education Committee. More recently, she served as Moderator of the Presbyterian Women for her church. She was also a member and past president of the Brownsville Junior Service League, the DuBois-Hite Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Fort Brown Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the BU Chapter of P.E.O., and the Wednesday Study Club. She made many friends through these organizations and truly enjoyed being with them. Agnes also enjoyed gardening, reading, and traveling to various countries. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her precious grandchildren.
