Arthur David Cantú "Coach Art Cantú", 56, lifelong resident of Brownsville, TX, passed away on Friday, August 18, 2017, at Valley Baptist Medical Center.
Art loved life and his job and had been an inspiration and a great example to many young lives via his job as a Coach and Teacher for the Brownsville Independent School District since 1993.
Art is preceded in death by his baby brother, Jaime G. Cantú (1959); his father, Federico Cantú (2013), and his grandparents: Eugenio and Rosa S. Cantu and Federico and Carolina Garza.
Art's caring and loving manner and contagious humor will be missed by his cherished wife, Esmeralda "Esmi" Zuñiga; his mother, Gregoria Garza Cantú his siblings: Norma Cantú from San Antonio, TX, Federico Jr. "Fred" and Laura Cantú Jr. from Austin, TX, Olga Rowehl from Austin, TX, Judith Rodriguez from Odessa, TX, and Nora Arita, from Brownsville, TX. Art was a great uncle to seven nieces and nephews and six grand-nieces/nephews. Art was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed not only by his family and friends but by all those fortunate to have known him.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and continue through 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 22nd at Darling Mouser Funeral Home with a rosary service scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 23rd at Immaculate Conception Cathedral, 1218 E. Jefferson St. All services will conclude after the Mass, and in accordance with Artie's wishes, cremation will follow.
Danny Pardo, Bobby Torres, Margarito Maldonado, Fred Gomez, James Arita Cantú, Fred Cantú III, Andy Maldonado, Bill Deen, Luis Garza, Eugenio Cantú III, Edward Lee Cantú, and Carlos Cañas are honored to be serving as Art's pallbearers.
Art's defensive line players from Pace, the coaches he worked with, and all his former players will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The Cantú and Zuñiga family would like to thank everyone that rushed to Art's side to provide medical assistance, especially those that stayed by his side and never left him alone for a moment. Thank you to Valley Baptist Medical Center for your help in easing our suffering at the the hospital; and of course, all the wonderful friends and colleagues that have showered us with such wonderful memories and comments about our dear Art "Artie" Cantu.
