BROWNSVILLE, TX. - Berta P. Guerra, affectionately known as Bertha, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, the 16th of July 2025. She was born November 18, 1933 in Brownsville, Texas, daughter of the late Jose and Berta P. Barrera.
Berta met her husband, Ruben Guerra, their sophomore year at Brownsville High School. They married in 1955. As her husband served in the United States Air Force over the course of 20 years, they were stationed at various air bases. Their last station was at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri where they lived for 12 years before returning to Brownsville in 1976.
Berta had many adventures while living in Missouri and made lifelong friends in the community. She was an active member of the community and her children’s school activities. She was even presented a plaque for Mom Squad “Mom of the Year.” Her and Ruben even opened a Mexican Restaurant, The Corral, while living in Missouri.
Upon returning to Brownsville, she started to work when her youngest son started school. When Sears opened their new store at Sunrise Mall, Berta worked in the shoe department for several years. She then worked at Lane Bryant at the old Amigoland Mall as a sales associate for a few years. But her real joy began when she started to work at the Brownsville Independent School District Transportation Department as a Bus Monitor. Serving students with Special Needs always suited her. After working for 19 years, she retired in 2004, at which time she took care of her youngest granddaughter.
Berta and Ruben have been avid supporters of the Rivera Raider Volleyball program since 1993. They traveled across the Valley every season to attend the games and even followed the team to many playoff games across South Texas. Several of the Raider girls often referred to them as Grandma and Grandpa as if they were their own.
Berta was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Berta Barrera; by her brothers, Dagobeto and Jose R. Barrera. Also preceding her in death is her daughter, the light of her life, Belinda Ann.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Ruben Guerra; by her sons, Robert Daniel Guerra (Sheri) and Richard Dean Guerra (Mary Elizabeth); and by her daughter Beverly J. Anzaldúa (Armando). She is also survived by her sister, Alma B. Torres; her grandchildren Rebecca, Sarah, and Jeremy Guerra (Alison), Jennifer Espinoza (Adan), Estanislao Anzaldúa (Francisca), and Richelle Guerra; and by nine great-grandchildren along with several nephews and nieces.
