Clarence Elijah Rodgers

BROWNSVILLE, TX. – On Tuesday, the 30th of August 2022, Clarence Elijah Rodgers was called home. He was seventy-nine years of age.

Clarence was born on April 6, 1943 in Kingsville, Texas, son of the affable J.D. Rodgers and the very wise Martha M. Rodgers. In his childhood and adolescence, Clarence was quiet and curious. It was this curiosity about the world that led him to enter into the United States Air Force where he served four years earning the rank of Sergeant. After leaving the U. S. Air Force, he lived in California for thirty years before returning home to Brownsville, Texas to help care for his ailing mother.

Clarence was a gentle and sociable man who easily and quickly made friends with people from all walks of life. He never met a stranger and always made a friend. Clarence loved to socialize and was an active patron and member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 2035. Clarence shared many happy hours with his fellow veteran family and always cherished these memories. He also treasured the many conversations and time spent with persons in his neighborhood, places of employment and many other establishments where the stories of life could be told. Clarence was also a man of strong faith. He was a long standing member of the St. James Missionary Baptist Church and served many years as its deacon until his retiring from the position.

Clarence was an uncomplicated man and had many interests and talents which included his love for photography, watching Science Fiction movies, bowling, going to the movies, watching old Western shows and movies, and he was particularly fond of travel. Clarence truly enjoyed driving long distances to visit family and friends and crossed the country many times just so he could see the many towns and cities along the way. However, his most favorite interest was hot tea. Clarence truly enjoyed relaxing at the end of every day with a hot cup of tea. Clarence’s talents were many but his most impressive talent was his ability to fix anything. If he heard it was broken or not working, he would just quietly go and fix it.

Preceding Clarence in death were his loving parents, J.D. Rodgers and Martha M. Rodgers; and his sister, Barbara (Bobbie) Wallace.

Clarence leaves behind his sisters Shirley Robinson, Cynthia Ann Fowler (Leonard), Kathryn Jo Woods (Arthur); and his brother, James Rodgers, Jr. He also leaves behind nieces, nephews, and many other family members. And of course, his many dear friends both old and new.

His gentle manner, kind eyes, soft laugh, warm smile, and big heart will truly be missed by each of his family and friends. He was the light that entered the room. “We love you.”

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, the 11th of September 2022 between the hours of five o'clock in the afternoon and eight o’clock in the evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.

A Graveside Service with military honors will be held at ten o'clock in the morning on Monday, the 12th of September 2022 at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4464 Old Port Isabel Road, Brownsville.
