BROWNSVILLE, TX. - Gumersindo "Chino" Aguilar entered into eternal rest on Monday, the 23rd of February 2026 in the comfort of his Brownsville residence surrounded by his family. He was 95 years of age.
Gumersindo was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to his parents, Maria Aguayo and Gumersindo Sr., a coal miner, at the onset of the Great Depression. Amid the economic hardship and social turmoil of that era, the family packed their belongings into a pickup truck and journeyed south to Mexico. They ultimately settled in Encarnación de Díaz, Jalisco, affectionately known as “La Chona,” a place that would forever remain close to his heart.
As a teenager, Gumersindo worked in a textile shop crafting sarapes. It was there that he earned the nickname “Boris,” inspired by the famed horror film actor Boris Karloff, a name that stayed with him for many years. In his twenties, he moved to Chicago, where he began his career in the service industry. Among his workplaces was the historic Pizzeria Uno. After years of hard work and saving, he returned to La Chona, purchased a building, and proudly opened his own pool hall.
In 1965, he married the love of his life, Maria de los Angeles Lopez, lovingly known as Angelita. In August 2025, they celebrated 60 beautiful years of marriage together. In the late 1960s, they moved to Los Angeles, and in the early 1970s, they made their permanent home in Brownsville. Gumersindo began working at the Fort Brown Resaca Club for the next twenty years. It was during his time there that he earned his second nickname, “Chino,” a fond reference to his curly hair. At home, he was known to tinker in the kitchen, making delicious meals, cutting up homegrown nopales, and barbecuing savory fajitas on the backyard patio. Even after retiring, his strong work ethic endured, and he continued working independently as a bartender for another twenty years.
Gumersindo had a deep love for music, especially playing his guitar, a passion he discovered in his twenties. He cherished boleros and shared his gift generously. As a devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, he faithfully played guitar during the Spanish Mass for over twenty years, enriching the liturgy and accompanying the congregation in worship with his music. In his retirement, he continued to bring comfort and joy to others by performing at senior citizen homes, where his songs touched many lives and hearts.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Angelita; his daughter, Maggie (Sean); his sons, Guillermo (Sandy), Hector (Gina), and Gustavo (Emily); his grandchildren, Cassandra (RJ), Victoria (Brian), Patricia, Frida, and Nico; and his great-grandchildren, Allison, Chloe, Rey, Liam, and Oliver. He will be remembered for his resilience, his warmth, his music, and his unwavering devotion to his family.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, the 1st of March 2026 between the hours of two o'clock in the afternoon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to be recited at seven o'clock Sunday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.
