BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Joanne Gilmore Hughston was born in Brownsville, Texas on January 6, 1932. She passed from this life on Wednesday, the 28th of June 2023 in Harlingen, Texas. Her parents were Oscar Carl Hamilton and Alice Lorraine Hamilton. She married Robert Paul Gilmore on August 18, 1950, and had two daughters, Carmela Gilmore and Deborah Kay Gilmore, all of which preceded Joanne in death. She leaves behind her brother, Carl Hamilton, and her devoted husband, Ray Hughston.

Joanne graduated from San Benito High School where she sang in the choir, was a twirler with the band, and also played the drums.

Joanne was a faithful member of the Church of the Advent, Episcopal in Brownsville and at one point was Directress of the Altar Guild.  She was also a proud member of PEO Chapter EV.

She was quite a social creature as witnessed by her participation with such organizations as the Pan American Round Table, Serape Club, Gay Nighters, and Zoofari Volunteers. She also enjoyed weekly "Harem" dinners at Toscafino's with Ray and friends Leeann Greer, Susan Klein, Cindy Copenhaver, Mary Jones, Noralee Hughston, Linda Montemayor, Lita Pashos, and Norma Ferguson. She also was an avid card player with a fondness for Hand and Foot Canasta. Her card playing group included Teddy Renfrow, Kaye Kimberling, Cindy Copenhaver, Karen Pattillo, Lita Pashos and Mary Jane Shands.

In her professional life, Joanne worked for the Brownsville Independent School District and was secretary to Principal Dan Breeden. She was also a realtor and proctor with Century 21 for many years.

Ray would like to thank Dr.  Juan Martinez, Yvette Cano and her assisted living staff in Harlingen as well as Fox Hollow Post Acute Care Nursing Facility in Brownsville.

A Memorial Service will be held at two o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 30th of June 2023 at Central Christian Church, 1100 Alton Gloor Boulevard, Brownsville.
