Jorge González

BROWNSVILLE, TX. - Jorge González, of Brownsville, Texas, a retired shrimp boat fleet owner and titan of the shrimping industry, passed away peacefully on Friday, the 29th of May 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 89 years of age.

Jorge was preceded in death by his parents, Lauro Gonzalez and Rosalva Gonzalez Rodriguez; his brother, Alvaro Jesus Gonzalez; and his sister, Maria De La Luz Gonzalez.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Nora Gonzalez (Ruiz); his nine children, Dalia Levy Ruiz, Jessica Gonzalez, Jorge Gonzalez, Joanna Gonzalez, Javier Gonzalez, Juvencio Gonzalez, Jeanette Gonzalez, Julie Gonzalez, and Jeneace Gonzalez; his grandchildren, Natalia Garcia, Javier Gonzalez, Jr., Eduardo Gonzalez, Esteban Gonzalez, and Marianna Gonzalez; his brother, Lauro Gonzalez; and by his sister, Olga Margarita Gonzalez, all of whom will forever cherish his memory and legacy.

Jorge called Villa Mainero, Tamaulipas, Mexico, his hometown. At the very young age of 13, he found himself living on the streets of Mexico, where he learned many of life's hardest lessons and developed the resilience, determination, and strength that would define him for the rest of his life. After the death of his father at a young age, he spent much of his teenage years living with various family members before eventually returning to the United States at the age of 16. With only an elementary education but an extraordinary thirst for knowledge and self-improvement, Jorge became a true self-made man. He was, in every sense, a Renaissance man who rose to become one of the most respected captains and leaders in the shrimping industry. He was an exceptional father who ensured that all nine of his children received college degrees and, for some, graduate studies, all without the burden of debt.

Jorge began his career at the Port of Brownsville in the shrimping industry, working his way up from a humble cook aboard a shrimp boat to becoming one of Texas's most successful shrimp boat fleet design engineers, builders, and owners. At the height of his career, he owned as many as twenty-seven shrimp boats. Among the vessels he owned were The Texas Ranger, Azteca, Chubasco, Conquistador, Ranchero, Maria Bonita, El Grande, El Mister, Mariachi, Compadre, Hercules, Jalapeño, El Viejón, San Jorge, Abuelo, El Brujo, León, No Más, Río Purificación, and Río Corona. Despite his tremendous success, Jorge remained humble, grounded, and deeply committed to the values of hard work, perseverance, integrity, and family. The values he instilled in his children were among his proudest accomplishments. Jorge was also a licensed airplane pilot and a man of many talents.

He and his loving wife, Nora, shared more than 32 years of adventures, love, and companionship, traveling throughout Mexico and the United States and creating countless cherished memories together. His passion for learning never faded. He was an avid reader who devoured books, maps and documentaries throughout his life. Jorge was always the one bringing laughter and humor to family gatherings and enjoyed sharing jokes with those around him. He eventually came to enjoy his retirement years away from the shrimping industry. In retirement, he enjoyed a well-earned slower pace of life while remaining immensely proud of his children and their accomplishments. He especially loved gathering around the dinner table with family in Mexico, planning his next road trip, and spending time with his beloved grandchildren, Natalia, Javier, Eduardo, Esteban, and Marianna.

We love you, Pops and Papi, as you were affectionately known. You will forever remain in our hearts. Your strength, wisdom, generosity, and love will continue to guide us, and your legacy will live on through the many lives you touched.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, the 2nd of June 2026 between the hours of twelve noon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to be recited at seven o'clock Tuesday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.

Visiting hours will resume at nine o'clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 3rd of June 2026. A Chapel Service will commence at twelve noon. Interment will then follow, via an escorted procession, at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4464 Old Port Isabel Road, Brownsville.

Jorge fue precedido en la muerte por sus padres, Lauro González y Rosalva González Rodríguez; su hermano, Álvaro Jesús González; y su hermana, María de la Luz González.

Jorge consideraba a Villa Mainero, Tamaulipas, México, como su tierra natal. A la temprana edad de 13 años, se encontró viviendo en las calles de México, donde aprendió algunas de las lecciones más difíciles de la vida y desarrolló la resiliencia, determinación y fortaleza que lo caracterizarían durante el resto de sus días. Tras la muerte de su padre cuando aún era joven, pasó gran parte de su adolescencia viviendo con distintos familiares, hasta que finalmente regresó a los Estados Unidos a los 16 años de edad. Con apenas una educación primaria, pero con una extraordinaria sed de conocimiento y superación personal, Jorge se convirtió en un hombre hecho a sí mismo. Fue, en todos los sentidos, un hombre renacentista que llegó a convertirse en uno de los capitanes y líderes más respetados de la industria camaronera. Fue también un padre excepcional que se aseguró de que sus nueve hijos obtuvieran títulos universitarios y, en algunos casos, estudios de posgrado, todo ello sin la carga de deudas estudiantiles.

Jorge inició su carrera en el Puerto de Brownsville dentro de la industria camaronera, ascendiendo desde un humilde puesto como cocinero a bordo de un barco camaronero hasta convertirse en uno de los más exitosos diseñadores, constructores y propietarios de flotillas camaroneras del estado de Texas. En el punto más alto de su carrera llegó a ser propietario de hasta veintisiete embarcaciones camaroneras. Los valores que inculcó en sus hijos fueron uno de sus mayores orgullos. Jorge también contaba con licencia de piloto aviador y era un hombre de múltiples talentos.

Junto a su querida esposa, Nora, compartió más de 32 años de aventuras, amor y compañerismo, recorriendo México y los Estados Unidos y creando innumerables recuerdos entrañables. Su pasión por el aprendizaje nunca disminuyó. Fue un ávido lector que disfrutó de libros, mapas y documentales durante toda su vida. Jorge era siempre quien aportaba alegría y buen humor a las reuniones familiares, disfrutando compartir bromas y anécdotas con quienes lo rodeaban. Con el tiempo, disfrutó plenamente de sus años de retiro, alejándose de la industria camaronera. Durante esta etapa vivió a un ritmo más tranquilo, bien merecido, mientras seguía sintiéndose inmensamente orgulloso de sus hijos y de sus logros. Disfrutaba especialmente reunirse alrededor de la mesa con su familia en México, planear su próximo viaje por carretera y pasar tiempo con sus queridos nietos: Natalia, Javier, Eduardo, Esteban y Marianna.

Te amamos, Pops y Papi, como cariñosamente te conocíamos. Permanecerás para siempre en nuestros corazones. Tu fortaleza, sabiduría, generosidad y amor continuarán guiándonos, y tu legado vivirá en las muchas vidas que tocaste.

La velación se llevará a cabo el martes 2 de junio de 2026, de las 12:00 del mediodía a las 9:00 de la noche, con el rezo del Santo Rosario programado para las 7:00 de la tarde en la Capilla Este de la Funeraria Darling-Mouser.

Las visitas continuarán el miércoles 3 de junio de 2026 a partir de las 9:00 de la mañana. A las 12:00 del mediodía se celebrará un servicio religioso en la capilla. Posteriormente, se realizará el cortejo fúnebre hacia el cementerio Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens, ubicado en 4464 Old Port Isabel Road, Brownsville, donde tendrá lugar la inhumación.
