CYPRESS, TX. - Laura Vasquez Lara, of Cypress, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, the 15th of May 2026, at 86 years of age. Born on January 29, 1940 in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico, daughter of the late Antonio Vasquez and Carmen Martinez, Laura carried with her the warmth, strength, and deep love of family that would come to define her beautiful life.
Laura was a devoted and loving mother to her daughters, Alyssa (Andres) and Melinna (Pablo), and an adoring grandmother to Ava and Alessandra. Ava and Ally were truly the light of her life, and there was nothing that brought her more joy than being their “Abue”. She was also a proud dog grandmother to Ace, Milo, and the newest addition, Atlas. Laura’s love for her family ran deep, and she was cherished beyond measure by her many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister-in-law and brother, Sarah and Juan Calzada; her sister and brother-in-law, Romana and Santiago Escobar; her brother, Joaquin Avalos Martinez; her nephew, George Calzada; and her niece, Sandra Hernandez.
Laura graduated from Villa Maria in Brownsville, Texas, and throughout her life she carried herself with quiet strength, deep faith, and an unwavering devotion to the people she loved most.
Laura played an irreplaceable role in raising her grandchildren. She cared for them as babies, delighted in spoiling them with her homemade meals, got them ready for school each morning, and lovingly waited for them at the bus stop each afternoon. In countless quiet, everyday ways, she wrapped them in love and created memories they will carry with them forever.
Laura showed her love most often through food. She took great joy in feeding the people she loved and rarely accepted no for an answer, especially when it came to her famous Mexican rice, huevos rancheros, and salsas. Her kitchen, like her heart, was always open.
Laura also had incredible spirit and boundless energy. She embraced life with curiosity and joy, whether she was enjoying the symphony, ballet, art museums, or discovering the newest restaurant with Melinna. She loved to travel and welcomed every chance to see something new. Her journeys took her throughout Mexico: her most recent trips took her to Mexico City, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, San Luis Potosi, Zacatecas, and the beautiful beaches of Tampico, Cabo San Lucas, and the Yucatán Peninsula. In the United States, she visited Alaska, Washington, Colorado, California, and Nevada, and made many trips to Florida. In Florida, she and her granddaughters enjoyed the beaches and experienced Walt Disney World for the first time together. She traveled to New York City with her dear friend Offie+, bravely navigating the subway system, touring the city on double-decker buses, and seeing Jersey Boys on Broadway. Her passport was stamped from unforgettable trips: Greece with friends; Italy with members of Christ the Good Shepherd Catholic Community; Brazil with Alyssa where she saw Christ the Redeemer and the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema; Whistler, Canada where she played in the snow with her granddaughters, and Costa Rica, where she marveled at the cloud forests, volcanoes, and sloths. She loved the world, and the world was richer for the way she embraced it.
Laura had a vibrant spirit and a deep love for celebrating life. She especially loved backyard gatherings filled with margaritas, tacos, and mariachis, her perfect combination. It feels especially meaningful that her family and friends were able to celebrate her recent 86th birthday surrounded by love, laughter, and all the things that made her happiest.
Laura will be remembered for her generosity, her warmth, her joyful spirit, and the deep and steady love she gave so freely. She made people feel cared for, welcomed, and at home. Her legacy lives on in her daughters, her grandchildren, the family traditions she lovingly created, and in the many lives she touched with her kindness, strength, and grace. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
