Leonard Stamm Alpert

The family of Leonard Stamm Alpert announces his death at home on June 10, 2018. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a beloved member of both the Houston and Brownsville Jewish communities.

Born in 1923 in Buffalo, NY to Dr. Theodore and Bessie Alpert, he graduated as valedictorian from the Buffalo Free Academy at the age of 16 and Caltech at the age of 20 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Leonard spent his entire professional career with Royal Dutch Shell, moving to Houston in 1959 to build the refinery in Deer Park Texas, from which he retired in 1985 from his position there as the Superintendent of Plastics and Resins.

In retirement Leonard found satisfaction in volunteer work with Meals on Wheels, and his vocational passions of stamp collecting and Astros baseball. As a life-long Astros fan (he took his 3 daughters to their first professional baseball game to see the Colt 45s the first summer they moved to Houston in 1959 and was probably the first parent to enroll his sons in the Astros' Buddies club), the Astros World Series 2017 win justified his devotion.

His commitment to his family was his top priority, matched only by his warmth, quick wit, and love of community. He taught Sunday school and served on the board at Temple Emanu El, and was actively involved in Bnai Brith and as an Associate of Hadassah.

Leonard is survived by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Elinor, and his children and their spouses: Elizabeth and Calvin Davidson, Emily Alpert and Bertha Janis, Evelyn Alpert and Leon Pesin, Ted and Keren Alpert, and James Alpert. His grandchildren are Jesse Davidson, Rachel and Sarah Pesin, and Margot, Lucy and Ali Alpert.

The Alpert family is especially grateful to Dr. Nisar Hussain and the Brownsville Community Health Center nursing staff for the tireless medical care they provided. Additionally they would like to thank the "super six", who cared for our father lovingly and with genuine affection in the last years of his life. They are Eva de Leon, Laura Cantu, Janie Loera, Sra. Laura Lopez, Liana Pena, and Gabi Orozco. The other Advanced Plus Home care ladies who helped in the end were also exceptional and Mr. Alpert and his family appreciated them all.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at the Brownsville Hebrew Cemetery located at the corner of East 2nd and Madison Streets behind the Brownsville City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601, 1-800-272-3900 and www.alz.org. May his memory be a blessing.
