Maria Del Refugio "Cookie" Garcia

Maria Del Refugio Garcia, 74, entered into the glory of her eternal life on Wednesday, July 5th, 2017, at Solara Hospital in Brownsville with her loving family at her side.

Cookie, as she was affectionately known to all, was a native and lifetime resident of Brownsville. She worked at the New Yorker and several department stores here in Brownsville and at Sam's Club in Houston. In her spare time, Cookie liked playing Bingo and Chalupa; and she loved to sing and dance. She also enjoyed flowers and gardening and kept canaries in her home.

Cookie was a devoted sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend who will be dearly missed not only by her family and friends but by all those fortunate to have known her.

Cookie was preceded in death by her mother, Francisca Amaro; a daughter, Laura R. Garcia De La Paz; a sister, Elida "Rosa" Casas; and two brothers, Homer Perez and Joe Molina.

Left behind to eternally treasure their memories of her are her children:
Norma L. Lucas and her husband Peter, Ana Patricia Martinez and her husband Daniel, Jose Garcia Jr., and Martha Garza and her husband Rolando; the five grandchildren that were the apple of her eye: Jonathan Lucas and his wife Arlene, Stephen Lucas, Joanna Shay Garza, Brittany Marie Martinez, and Phoebe Danielle Martinez; and 3 great-grandchildren: Allison Kristine, Ashlynn Jean, and Zachary Conner Lucas. Cookie will also be missed by her sister Maria Hortencia Garza and her husband Juan Jose and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

In accordance with Cookie's wishes, she will be cremated. A Celebration of her Life will take place on Sunday, July 9th, 2017. The family will start to receive family and friends at 3:00 p.m. with the recitation of the holy rosary scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. in the East Chapel at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. All services will conclude on Sunday evening.
