Maria Lydia Torres

BROWNSVILLE, TX. - Maria Lydia Torres entered into eternal rest on Sunday, the 7th of April 2024 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville. She had just celebrated her eighty-fifth birthday. 

Maria was born on April 3, 1939 in Brownsville, Texas, daughter of the late Camerino and Maria Lydia Salazar. She attended Brownsville High School, graduating Class of 1958. Maria was a clerk with the State of Texas, then retired as a service representative with the Social Security Administration after thirty-four years of dedicated service. She loved spending her days with her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed lunches with her retired colleagues and former classmates. 

Preceding Maria in death was her beloved husband, Andres Simon Torres, Sr.; her son, Andres Simon Torres, Jr.; her parents, Camerino Salazar and Maria Lydia Salazar; and her sister, Ninfa Salazar. 

Survivors include her sons Javier Torres (Janie), Jose Torres, and Eloy Torres; her daughter-in-law, Esperanza B. "Hopie" Torres; her grandchildren Kristen L. Walling (Ryan), Elizabeth M. Torres (Frank), and Sandra R. Torres (Deion); her great-grandchildren Everly H. Jimenez, Xander Castillo, and Nathan Lujano; in addition to extended family members.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, the 11th of April 2024 between the hours of one o'clock in the afternoon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to begin at seven o'clock Thursday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ten o'clock in the morning on Friday, the 12th of April 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1914 Barnard Road, Brownsville. All services will conclude at the church. Cremation will follow.
