Maria Magdalena Caballero

BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Maria Magdalena Caballero of Brownsville was met with the sweet embrace of the lord on Thursday, the 24th of August 2023. She was seventy-eight years of age. She was born on December 13, 1944 in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Our beloved matriarch’s journey was marked by resilience, courage, and an unyielding spirit, and will forever serve as inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Maria was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister and friend to many. She shared her love by making sure both hearts and tummies were full. Her specialty was tamales and tight hugs.

Her most profound and meaningful joy came from raising her five sons. After becoming a widow at the age of thirty-nine, she taught her sons the importance of education and hard work. Leading them to become successful pillars of their communities. She also dedicated herself to caring for her ten grandchildren and was the best at spoiling them.

Although she was small in stature, her zest for life was grand. She never missed an opportunity to hit the dance floor or sing along to her favorite mariachi songs.

Maria was the true definition of a warrior, battling and overcoming cancer four different times. In the darkest moments, she showed us that true strength lies not solely in the body, but in the depths of one’s character and the power of the human spirit.

Preceding Maria in death was her husband, Benjamin Caballero, Sr.; her mother, Paula Recio; her beloved son, Carlos Caballero, Sr.; her brothers, Guadalupe, Alfredo, and Juan Cardenas, and Jose, Heriberto, and Severino Fernandez; and her sister, Virginia Guerra.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-laws Victor (Corina), Juan (Mary), Benjamin Jr. (Maria De Rosario), Rolando (Angelica), and Elvia Caballero; her grandchildren Cristina, Victor Jr. (Clarissa), Juan Jr. (Mellie), Benjamin III, Michael (Amanda), Carlos Jr., Jaime, Magdalena, Ayleen, and Rolando Jr.; her great-grandchildren Sammy, Sarah, and Camila; her sister, Maria Saenz; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

While we mourn the loss of a truly remarkable woman, we take solace in knowing that her unwavering love will forever guide us.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, the 28th of August 2023 between the hours of twelve noon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to begin at seven o'clock Monday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ten o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 29th of August 2023 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 2645 Tulipan Street, Brownsville. Interment will then follow, via an escorted procession, at Buena Vista Burial Park, 5 McDavitt Boulevard, Brownsville.

Honored to serve as her pallbearers will be her grandchildren Victor Jr., Juan Jr., Benjamin III, Michael, Carlos, Jr., Jaime, and Rolando, Jr. Caballero. Greg Cardenas will serve as honorary pallbearer.
