BROWNSVILLE, TX. - Mary Lou Garza Bewley passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Tuesday, the 17th of June 2025. Born on November 2, 1940, in Brownsville, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Guadalupe Garza and Fidela Villarreal. Mary Lou will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In August 1962, Mary Lou married Major Ronald L. Bewley, with whom she had two daughters. Ronald served in the U.S. Air Force and was declared missing during a mission — a loss that left a lasting impact on her life. Mary Lou later welcomed another daughter, adding further joy and meaning to her life.
Professionally, Mary Lou was a dedicated and respected real estate agent whose commitment, integrity, and service to others earned the admiration of colleagues and clients alike. She held several leadership roles and served on various committees for the Brownsville-South Padre Island Board of Realtors.
A proud alumna of Brownsville High School, Mary Lou remained actively involved through the reunion committee of the Class of 1960, maintaining close bonds with lifelong friends and classmates. Her Catholic faith was a guiding force in her life, reflected in her longtime involvement with the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, where she found both spiritual fulfillment and a strong community of service-minded women. She was also a proud and spirited member of the Red Hatters.
Mary Lou loved to dance and never missed a chance to celebrate Charro Days Fiesta Noche Mexicana. She cherished her Bunco group and looked forward to regular trips to Las Vegas and Louisiana. Known for her warmth, laughter, and generosity, she made those around her feel seen, loved, and appreciated. Her friendships meant the world to her, and she felt deeply the affection they returned.
She was preceded in death by Major Ronald L. Bewley; Olalla Garza Perales, Ray Contreras, Matilde Guillen, and Fidelfa Gonzalez.
She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Loewecke (Brian), Melissa Muzquiz (Luis), and Angela Garcia (Arturo); her grandchildren Kristopher Loewecke, Katrina Smith (Christopher), Julia Muzquiz, Sofia Ares Muzquiz, Tesa Muzquiz, Alyssa Garcia, Audrey Garcia, Abriana Garcia, and AJ Garcia; and her great-grandchild, Harlow Smith.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, the 22nd of June 2025 between the hours of five o’clock in the afternoon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to begin at seven o'clock Sunday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at two o'clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 23rd of June 2025 at the historic Immaculate Conception Cathedral, 1218 E. Jefferson Street, Brownsville. Interment will then follow, via an escorted procession, at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4464 Old Port Isabel Road, Brownsville.
