Michael Lewis Stowe

BROWNSVILLE, TX. - Michael Lewis Stowe, 70, peacefully passed away at home on Wednesday, the 14th of October 12026. Born August 23, 1956, in McAllen, Texas, he was a loving son to Doris Janet (Salmon) Stowe and Oscar Lewis Stowe.

Mike was a member of the 1975 graduating class of Brownsville High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from The University of Texas Pan American at Brownsville and continued his education by obtaining a Master of Science degree in School Psychology from Texas A&M University.

He participated in significant research in the field of school psychology and was proud to have materially contributed to the first edition of The Handbook of School Psychology. This book was considered the benchmark reference for graduate-level training in school psychology.

Mike was certified by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists as both a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology and a Psychological Associate. He began his career at College Station Independent School District. After returning to South Texas, he was a long-time employee of San Benito Consolidated Independent School District. His professional goal was always to recommend the most appropriate learning setting for the students he served.

As a young man Mike cultivated varied interests. He earned a pilot license at the age of 17, took up scuba diving, learned to ride a unicycle, served as assistant manager of the Amigoland Mall movie theater, and won awards for his debate performances. In his spare time, he happily took part in local theater productions with both Camille Playhouse and The Company Players.

It was while participating in summer theater that Mike met a cast member who would become his wife. Soon after, he married Karen Grotzinger and they made their home in College Station before returning to Brownsville. Mike was a devoted and loving husband. He will be profoundly missed.

He was a natural problem solver and approached each new project with precision, innovation, and attention to detail. Mike particularly enjoyed every aspect of restoring his vintage 1930’s home in West Brownsville. From plumbing to electrical to carpentry, he studied and mastered each task. Mike often joked that there was no place in the house that he had not climbed over, crawled under, or squeezed through.

To family, friends, and neighbors, Mike was their go-to weather enthusiast. His online, up-to-date weather station data was accessed daily by many people and he frequently received calls and texts requesting customized weather forecasts.

Mike will be remembered fondly for his analytical and inquisitive nature, keen mind, and logical thinking. He enjoyed family gatherings, lively conversation, a good adult beverage, and cooking his signature leatherneck tacos.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Doris Janet (Salmon) Stowe and Oscar Lewis Stowe.

Left to mourn his passing is his wife of 44 years, Karen Grotzinger Stowe. He is survived by two brothers-in-law that he loved like brothers, Roger Grotzinger and Bruce Grotzinger. Mike will also be remembered affectionately by cousins, friends, and extended family.

Karen offers her unending gratitude to the nurses and staff of SafeHaven Hospice for their dignified, compassionate and attentive care. Heartfelt thanks go to Nurse Angel Fortiscue for the years of nurturing support she provided to Mike. And, a special thank you go to Sarahi and Ludy for their gentle and comforting assistance.

Additionally, Karen wants to acknowledge two very special people who offered the family boundless encouragement during the past several years. They are Jonathan Galicki whose steadfast friendship is appreciated beyond measure and Vicki Moser whose love and understanding provide solace.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date for family and friends to share memories of a life well lived by a man well loved.
