BATON ROUGE, LA. - Ofelia Flores Russell, a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and aunt, passed away peacefully on Thursday, the 10th of September 2026, at the age of 89.
Born in Brownsville, Texas on April 11, 1937, Ofelia graduated from Brownsville High School and attended Texas Southmost College before working and retiring as a Budget Analyst from the United States Department of Defense. Most recently, she resided in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and was a devout member of St. George Catholic Church.
Ofelia and her husband CSM (Ret.) Walter Edward Russell recently marked their 40th wedding anniversary.
She is survived by her husband, Walter; daughter, Sandra Cadriel Cox (Keith); and her grandchildren that she loved dearly, William Andrew Flores Cox, Alexandra Leigh Cox, and Olivia Marie Cox. She also leaves behind her sister, Celia Flores Garcia, and sisters-in-law, Glenda Russell Giovannoni and Evana Flores Davis, as well as nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart, including Lilia Garcia, Alessandra Garcia Potts (Elton), Diana Whitworth Nelson (Joel), Judge Mark Whitworth (Jenna), Danny Whitworth (Connie), and Dr. Ted Whitworth (Angela), as well as great-nieces and great-nephews.
Ofelia was reunited in eternity with her parents, Manuel Flores-Martinez and Maria Cantu Flores; brothers, SGT Roberto Flores and Manuel Flores; sister, Edelmira Flores Whitworth; and her brothers-in-law, Dr. Martin E. Garcia and Paul Edward Whitworth.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, the 16th of September 2026 between the hours of six o'clock in the evening and eight o'clock at night, within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, in which family and friends are cordially invited to pay their respects.
A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Ofelia's life and faith will be held at nine o'clock in the morning on Thursday, the 17th of September 2026 at the historic Immaculate Conception Cathedral, 1218 E. Jefferson Street, Brownsville. Interment within the Flores Family plot will then follow, via an escorted procession, at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4464 Old Port Isabel Road, in her hometown of Brownsville, Texas.
