Patricia R. Fernandez

BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Patricia R. Fernandez entered into eternal rest on Thursday, the 30th of July 2026 at Sunshine Haven in Olmito, Texas. She was 67 years of age.

Patricia was born on February 17, 1959, in Mexico City, Mexico, into a distinguished family whose lineage traces back to the Spanish Royal Family. She attended Queen Mary Academy in Mexico City before relocating to the United States in the mid-1970s, where she settled in the Houston and Katy areas.

During her high school years, Patricia volunteered as a Candy Striper nurse's aide at MD Anderson Cancer Center. She later worked in hospitals throughout the Texas Medical Center during the pioneering era of Dr. Michael DeBakey and Dr. Denton Cooley, where she witnessed the earliest heart transplant procedures that marked a historic chapter in modern medicine.

Inspired by her passion for caring for others, Patricia earned her Registered Nurse (RN) license in 1990. Two years later, while vacationing on South Padre Island with her grandfather and brother, she met Eugene Fernandez, a hotel manager. Their meeting blossomed into a lifelong love story. They were married in the Episcopal Church in July of the following year and, the very next day, rushed off the following day and married again in the Catholic Church in Lomas de Tecamachalco, Mexico.

During their first year of marriage, Eugene served as National Franchise Manager for Days Inns of Mexico, and the couple resided in Mexico City. This special time allowed Patricia and Eugene to spend cherished moments with her large extended family. They later returned to the United States, where Eugene managed a hotel in San Antonio while Patricia accepted leadership roles in home health management.

In 1996, they returned to Brownsville where Patricia joined the Brownsville Independent School District, serving as the school nurse at Hudson Elementary and Morningside Elementary, where she became a trusted caregiver and advocate for countless students.

Never one to stop learning, Patricia returned to The University of Texas at Brownsville to earn her Master's degree in Counseling and became a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). She dedicated nine years to Catholic Charities, compassionately serving individuals and families in need before accepting a position at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Brownsville, where she supervised the Counseling Center.

Throughout her career, Patricia touched countless lives through her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to helping others. She was deeply respected by her colleagues and genuinely loved by her students, who were fortunate to learn under her guidance.

Preceding Patricia in death are her father, Ramon Ramirez; her grandparents, Wallace Hampton Katze and Paz Ortega Katze.

Patricia is survived by her husband, Eugene Fernandez, of Brownsville, who is Director of a non-profit historical foundation; by her mother, Patricia Katze, of the Woodlands, Texas; by her two sisters, Veronica Gilbert (Craig) and Barbara Kaiser, both of which live in Houston, Texas; by her brothers, Jose Ramirez of Mexico and Javier Ramirez of the Woodlands, Texas, and Ramon Ramirez (Kate), of New Mexico.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, the 7th of August 2026 between the hours of four o'clock in the afternoon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to be recited at seven o'clock Friday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.

Visiting hours will resume at eight o'clock in the morning on Saturday, the 8th of August 2026, within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, where a chapel service is to commence at ten o'clock in the morning. Entombment will then follow, via an escorted procession, within the Fernandez Family Plot at the historic Brownsville Old City Cemetery.
