BROWNSVILLE, TX. – With hearts full of love and deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Romana Escamilla Garcia, a devoted wife to the late Alfredo L. Garcia, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, daughter, sister, and faithful servant of the Lord. Surrounded by her loving family, Romana entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, the 16th of July 2025, leaving behind a profound legacy of unwavering faith, selfless love, and devoted service.
Romana was born to Tomas Escamilla and Jacoba Alameda Escamilla Campos, and was lovingly raised by them. After the passing of her father, she was also lovingly guided by her stepfather, Marcos Campos. One of eight siblings, she was the second eldest and the eldest daughter. She now rejoices in heaven, reunited with her cherished husband, parents, and siblings: Ignacio Escamilla, Jose Escamilla, Jesus Escamilla, Arturo Escamilla, Victoriano Escamilla, Petra Campos, and Cruz Campos.
Romana’s life was deeply rooted in her faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and centered on an abiding love for her family. She was the heart and foundation of her home, exemplifying a life of sacrifice, compassion, and grace. Her love extended far beyond her immediate family - her home and heart were always open to those in need.
She proudly served in the Brownsville Independent School District Food Service Department for 30 years, nourishing generations of children and making a lasting impact that reached well beyond the cafeteria. Her passion for cooking was a gift she shared freely - with her family, neighbors, and church community.
As a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Romana found great joy in preparing and serving meals for weekly Bingo Night - a tradition she faithfully upheld for 20 years. This act of service brought her deep fulfillment and a lasting connection with her faith community.
When not in the kitchen, Romana found peace and joy in her garden, lovingly tending to her plants - especially her cherished roses.
Her greatest pride and joy were her children and the generations that followed. She is survived by her beloved family: Yolanda Hampton, Victoria Cavazos, Graciela Espinosa, Alfred E. Garcia, Jr., Jacoba Hampton, Ignacio Garcia, Maria de los Angeles Young, Daniel Thomas Garcia, and Alma Garcia.
Romana is also survived by a large and loving family of more than 80 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, each of whom carries forward her legacy of faith, kindness, and enduring strength.
Her 100 years of life were a powerful testament to the strength of love and the beauty of a servant’s heart. Though her presence will be deeply missed, her spirit lives on in every life she touched and every heart she nurtured. Romana will be remembered as a faithful servant, cherished matriarch, and beloved soul.
