BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Mrs. Rosa Maria Hensley Castellanos passed away peacefully her residence in San Antonio, Texas, in the care of her daughter Rosemary, on Sunday, the 10th of September 2023. She was eighty-nine years of age.

Mrs. Hensley was born in Tampico, Mexico on November 19, 1933, daughter of the late Leopoldo and Rafaela Benavidez Castellanos. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. A devout Catholic, Mrs. Hensley was a parishioner of St. Luke Catholic Church in Brownsville, Texas. Some of her favorite pastimes included hunting, fishing, and gardening, and she loved to spend time with the joys of her life, her grandchildren. She was full of life and never missed an opportunity to dance, whether it was at a party, wedding, birthdays, or attending her favorite event of all here in Brownsville, Sombrero Fest.

Our beloved matriarch’s journey was full of resilience, selflessness, and fearlessness. She was dedicated to her family and to helping others and always looked for the best in everyone. She loved people and people loved her.

Mrs. Hensley will forever serve as an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Preceding Mrs. Hensley in death was her husband, Sewell S. Hensley; her son, Larry S. Hensley; her parents, Leopoldo and Rafaela Castellanos of Tampico, Mexico; her sister Antonia Castellanos de Morales; and her twin brother, Jose Luis Castellanos, and brothers, Leopoldo Castellanos of Tampico, Mexico and Carlos Castellanos, Massillon, Ohio.

Survivors include her daughters Anna Hensley Garza (Alejo) of Orange Grove, Texas, Rosemary Hensley Robledo (Tom) of San Antonio, Texas, and Connie Hensley (Richard Fernandez) of South Padre Island, Texas; her daughter-in-law, Imelda Hensley (Larry +); her sisters, Hortensia Castellanos de Vega (Heriberto) and Sara Castellanos de Gonzales (Guadalupe +) both of Tampico, Mexico; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, the 14th of September 2023 between the hours of one o’clock in the afternoon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to begin at seven o'clock Thursday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at two o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 15th of September 2023 at St. Luke Catholic Church, 2800 Rockwell Drive, Brownsville. Interment will then follow, via an escorted procession, at Buena Vista Burial Park, 5 McDavitt Boulevard, Brownsville.

Honored to service as her pallbearers are her grandchildren Alejo Garza, Jr., Adrian T. Robledo, Adam E. Robledo, Larry James Hensley, Stephen Helios Rossell, Robert Lee Hensley, and Ernesto Arizmendi.
