RANCHO VIEJO, TX. – Rudy V. Gomez, 81, a longtime and highly respected architect from Brownsville, Texas, passed away on Friday, the 6th of March 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He lived a life defined by devotion to his family, and faith, dedication to his community, and a deep passion for his profession.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Rudy was a proud graduate of Texas A&M University, Class of ‘66, where he earned two bachelor’s degrees in Architectural Design and Architectural Construction. While at Texas A&M, he was a member of the Corps of Cadets, serving three years in Company D-2 before transferring to H-2 during his senior year. After completing his studies, Rudy began his career working with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. In 1973, he moved to the Rio Grande Valley, where he eventually established his architectural firm, Gomez Mendez Saenz, Inc.
Affectionately known to his family as “Papu,” Rudy was known for his vibrant personality and love of life. He enjoyed driving his Nissan Zs throughout the Valley, playing golf, and enthusiastically teaching anyone willing to learn how to ski.

Among his many accomplishments, his firm provided architectural planning services for more than 12 South Texas school districts and 11 housing authorities. In Brownsville, notable projects included the $7 million Brownsville Events Center and the $62 million Veterans Memorial High School for Brownsville Independent School District.
Known for his integrity, leadership, and strong work ethic, Rudy was an active member of several professional organizations, including the Texas Society of Architects, the American Institute of Architects, the American Institute of Certified Planners, and the American Planning Association.
A lifelong supporter of Texas A&M University, Rudy served on the Board of Directors of The Association of Former Students. He was also active in the Aggie Real Estate Network and the Texas A&M Hispanic Network, and played a dedicated role in the Cameron/Willacy County A&M Club, where he served as president, vice president, and chairman of the scholarship committee.
Above all, Rudy cherished his family. He shared a loving marriage with his wife, Frances Gomez, and was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He treasured the time he spent with his children and grandchildren and took great joy in celebrating their accomplishments.
Rudy will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, and the lasting impact he made on his profession and on the many people whose lives he touched. His legacy will live on through the communities he helped build and the family he loved so deeply.
