Xóchitl Vega Hidalgo

BROWNSVILLE, TX. - Xóchitl Vega Hidalgo entered into eternal rest on Sunday, the 19th of July 2026, in Brownsville, Texas. She was 98 years of age.

Xóchitl was born on November 20, 1927, in Brownsville, Texas, daughter of the late Raquel Lopez Hidalgo and Vicente Vega Hidalgo.

In 1929, she moved with her parents and older brothers, Hector and Boris, to Detroit, Michigan, where her father began work for the Ford Motor Company. Two years later, the family returned to Brownsville where Xóchitl attended local schools and graduated from Brownsville High School. She then enrolled in nursing school at Arkansas Baptist Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. After earning her RN certification, she joined Mercy Hospital in Brownsville as a surgical room nurse.

Following an automobile accident that prevented her from resuming the physical demands of work as a surgical room nurse, she left the nursing profession and joined the Brownsville Independent School District as a migrant home counselor. Deeply committed to understanding the educational needs of migrant farm children, she spent one season traveling the nation with migrant families to personally witness the working and living conditions they faced. She retired from her migrant home counselor position after many years of dedicated service to the school district and to hundreds of migrant school children.

Her favorite pastimes included gardening, playing cards, loteria, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Preceding Xóchitl in death are her parents, Raquel Lopez Hidalgo and Vicente Vega Hidalgo; her brothers, Hector Vega Hidalgo and Boris V. Hidalgo; and her son-in-law, Hector Santiago Proo.

Survivors include her daughter, Carla Raquel Vega Hidalgo; her grandchildren, James Proo, Hector Diego Proo, and Lux Emilio Proo; her great-grandson, Nahum Xavier Acuna; her sister, Deborah Hidalgo; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins and their children.

The family wishes to thank Xóchitl’s long-time friend, Letty Ramirez and her extended family in Brownsville, and Xóchitl’s niece, Eva A. “Vita” Vega & her extended family in Laredo, Texas, for the loving and attentive care they provided to Xóchitl in the final years of her life.
