BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Consuelo C. Champion, age 89, passed away peacefully at home in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico on Monday, June 14, 2021 due to chronic health complications.

Consuelo was born on October 8, 1932 in San Benito, Texas to Daniel and Petra Chapa of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. She graduated from San Benito High School in 1950 and in 1954 married Augusto O. Champion, Jr. She received a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Texas at Austin in 1971 and a master’s degree in History from Texas Pan American University at Brownsville, Texas in 1986. She worked for several years as an elementary school teacher at Saint Mary’s Catholic School and at Sharp Elementary School in Brownsville, Texas where she was loved by her students.

In 1968, at age 36, she became a widow and dedicated her life to educating and parenting her two sons and her daughter who at the time were aged 12, 10, and 7. She did an exemplary job at raising them and instilling solid values that have served them well. Her love and appreciation of music and art was passed to her children.

Consuelo had a passion for cooking and loved making meals for her family. During Sunday lunches at “Tita Consuelo’s” house, she prepared delicious dishes giving the attending multi-generation family members an opportunity to catch up and spend their time together. She loved classical music and her favorites where the Chopin Nocturnes. She very much enjoyed painting where her favorite medium was oil. She read history books, watched “oldies but goodies,” and loved cats and dogs, in particular German Shepherds.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother; her loving husband; and her siblings Daniel, Luciano, Berta, Romeo, and Blanca.

Consuelo is survived by her brother, Ruben; her three children, Augusto III, Jorge Patricio, and Consuelito; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and several sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
