LAGUNA VISTA, TX. – Marco Antonio De Leon, RN passed away on Friday, July 24, 2020 at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, Long Island, New York, at the age of 44. A bicentennial baby, Marco was born on July 5, 1976 in Brownsville, Texas.
Marco spent his early youth attending Matamoros schools but went on to South Texas High School for Health Professions, also known as Med-High, in Mercedes, Texas where he graduated with honors, Class of 1994. He was a gifted student and received his Bachelor of Nursing Degree from The University of Texas in Austin, garnering many academic awards along the way as well as receiving some of the highest scores throughout his education.
Marco began his nursing career in Brownsville. With specialties in Surgical and Critical Care he eventually moved on to becoming a traveling nurse with his last assignment being at NYU Winthrop Hospital on Long Island, New York in response for help in combating COVID-19. Running towards the war zone instead of away from it, he died a HERO in every sense of the word.
Marco had many passions outside of the professional realm. He had an appreciation for the outdoors, well known for his love of fishing, hunting and his guns. He was a dedicated son to his 77-year-old widowed mother, Virginia De Leon, putting his whole heart into everything she needed or required. And spoiling her was not a missed opportunity. All who knew him well heard him proudly share of his mother's love and attentiveness for him.
Marco was preceded in death by his father, Librado De Leon.
He is survived by his loving and cherished mother, Virginia De Leon; his faithful dogs Bella, Paloma, and Rocky; along with his aunts, Estela Cazares and Isabel Zamora (married to Anthony Zamora); uncles, Eligio Cazares and Rogelio Cazares (Maria Antonia Cazares); and numerous cousins. He will be dearly missed by all his family, friends, and colleagues.
